What it is
Addressing opportunistic behaviors in dogs involves staging situations where those behaviors occur in order to correct and redirect them.
How we teach it
Address Any Opportunistic Issues
- Establishing Training Environment: Create a situation where an opportunistic behavior occurs.
- Correct: When the dog begins to display that behavior, provide an immediate correction to disrupt the behavior.
- Redirect: Redirect the dog into another behavior or pattern in order to improve the default behavior in the future.
Off
- Identify Triggers: Recognize what makes your dog jump, whether it's your arrival, visitors, or excitement. Understanding triggers aids in training.
- Teach "Off" Command: Introduce "Off" by luring your dog away with a treat. If they are having a hard time understanding, use your leash to guide them to where they should be.vReward when they respond. Repeat until consistent.
- Train Four Paws on Ground: Once "Off" is understood, teach them to keep all four paws down. Use treats to encourage this behavior.
Practice at home
- Be consistent with your training. The more consistent you are with the "Off" command, the more likely your dog is to learn it.
- Take Photos or Videos: Capturing your progress back at home or outside will help us provide additional feedback.
Go deeper
Jumping is a common behavior for dogs of all ages and breeds. It can be caused by a number of factors, such as excitement, playfulness, or a desire for attention.
