What it is

Training your dog to sit is a foundational and essential obedience skill.

How we teach it

  • Encourage Sit with Luring: Hold a treat above your dog's head to prompt a sit.
  • Mark and Reward Success: Use "yes", a clicker, or a hand signal to mark the sit and then reward.
  • Consistent Repetition: Repeat until your dog consistently responds to the sit command.
  • Gradual Duration Increase: Extend the time before treating to lengthen the sit duration.
  • Extended Sitting Practice: Continue until your dog can comfortably sit for an extended period.

Practice at home

  • Be positive. Use positive reinforcement when your dog follows the "Sit" command.
  • Take Photos or Videos: Capturing your progress back at home or outside will help us provide additional feedback.

Go deeper

The "Sit" command is one of the most basic and important commands that you can teach your dog. It is useful in a variety of situations, such as when you need your dog to stay still for a vet exam, when you need them to wait their turn, or when you need them to be calm in public.
