Minimal Resistance
What it is
A fundamental command that you want to make a positive. Dogs should be comfortable laying down when told to do so. You want to reward heavily every time your dog downs. This command will make it easier for you to take your dog places, as well as staying in one spot.
How we teach it
- Luring into Down Position: Guide your dog into the down position using treats for positive reinforcement.
- Reward for Compliance: When your dog is down, reward them immediately.
- Repetition for Reliability: Repeat until your dog reliably responds to the lure.
- Fade the Lure Gradually: Move the treat closer to your body, reducing dependence on luring.
- Command without Lure: Give the "Down" command without a lure once your dog is adept.
Practice at home
- Practice at home: Be positive. Use positive reinforcement when your dog follows the "Down" command.
- Take Photos or Videos: Capturing your progress back at home or outside will help us provide additional feedback.

The "Down" command is one of the most basic and important commands that you can teach your dog. It is useful in a variety of situations, such as when you need your dog to stay still for a vet exam, when you need them to lie down in a crowded place, or when you need them to calm down.
