How we teach it
- Quiet Environment Setup: Begin in a calm space with minimal distractions to aid focused learning.
- Introduction of the Mat or Bed: Place a designated mat or bed on the floor, ensuring it's comfortable and appealing.
- Luring Onto the Mat: Use a treat to guide your dog onto the mat. All four paws on the mat should be the goal.
- Marking and Rewarding: Repeat the process, consistently marking and rewarding when your dog gets onto the mat.
- Introduction of Cue Word: Once your dog reliably gets on the mat, start associating the cue word "place."
- Cue Word Integration: Say the cue word before luring your dog onto the mat. Consistency is key.
Practice at home
- Make the place command fun. If your dog is having fun, they are more likely to be motivated to learn.
- Take Photos or Videos: Capturing your progress back at home or outside will help us provide additional feedback.
Go deeper
The place command is a valuable tool for dog owners. It can be used to manage dogs and limit opportunistic behaviors, such as jumping, begging, or chewing.
