What it is
Develop your dog's recall to heel command, enhancing control and safety during walks and outings.
How we teach it
Recall to Heel
- Foundation Recall: Begin with basic recall training. Call your dog's name followed by "come" in a distraction-free area. Reward upon arrival.
- Introduce “Heel”: Once recall is consistent, introduce the “heel” command. Stand still, call your dog, and as they reach you, command “heel”, guiding them to your side. Reward for compliance.
- Combine Commands: Practice the recall with an added “heel” at the end. Increase distance gradually, always rewarding successful execution.
- Practice in Different Settings: Train in various environments with increasing distractions, maintaining the recall to heel sequence.
- Consistent Reinforcement: Regularly reinforce both recall and heel commands separately and in combination to solidify understanding.
Recall/Come/Front
- Sit Position: Start with your dog sitting.
- Treat in Hand: Grab a high-value treat.
- Short Distance Back: Take a few steps back.
- Lure & "Come" Command: Lure with treat, say "Come" as they approach.
- Sit Command: When your dog reaches you, lure your dog into a sit with a treat.
- Mark & Reward: Click or say "Yes!" and reward when they reach you in a sit.
- Repeat: Practice this exercise multiple times.
- Increase Distance: Gradually take larger steps back as your dog succeeds.
Practice at home
- Be consistent with your training. The more consistent you are with the "Come" command, the more likely your dog is to obey it.
- Take Photos or Videos: Capturing your progress back at home or outside will help us provide additional feedback.
